Role Summary
The Sr. Manager, Technical Accounting will serve as the primary technical accounting expert for the organization, responsible for leading complex US GAAP research, drafting accounting policies, and supporting financial reporting. This highly visible role collaborates across Sales, Legal, FP&A, R&D, and the CFO organization to ensure sound accounting treatment for SaaS contracts, software development, M&A activities, and other strategic initiatives.
This position is ideal for a Big 4 or public accounting professional seeking a transition into industry with the opportunity to help build a technical accounting function from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical accounting research across US GAAP topics including ASC 606, software capitalization, leases, consolidations, impairments, derivatives, restructurings, and M&A
- Serve as the internal subject matter expert on ASC 606—review contracts, assess revenue recognition, prepare memos, and guide policy enforcement
- Review customer, vendor, and other contracts to determine proper accounting treatment and document conclusions
- Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and controls to support accurate, consistent financial reporting
- Collaborate with Sales, FP&A, Legal, and Product/R&D on contract structures, pricing, and recognition standards
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including resolving technical accounting issues
- Prepare and maintain GAAP-compliant financial statements, disclosures, and footnote support
- Serve as the point of contact for external auditors—coordinate audit requests and manage technical discussions
- Monitor new accounting standards and assess their impact on financial reporting and operations
- Provide training on technical accounting topics to both accounting staff and non-accounting stakeholders (Sales, R&D, HR, etc.)
- Support FP&A in explaining the impact of new guidance on budgets, forecasts, and results
- Assist with systems improvements, including scaling reporting within NetSuite and future ERP transitions
Key Requirements
- CPA required
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting; Big 4 manager-level experience strongly preferred
- Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP with deep expertise in:
- ASC 606 (SaaS revenue recognition)
- Software capitalization
- Consolidations
- Lease accounting
- M&A, impairments, derivatives
- Experience preparing consolidated financial statements and disclosures
- Ability to write clear technical accounting memos and explain complex rules to non?accountants
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- High attention to detail and intellectual curiosity
- Experience with ERP systems—NetSuite preferred; Oracle/SAP a plus
- Ability to mentor team members and collaborate across departments
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a private-equity-backed environment
- SaaS/technology industry experience
- Experience implementing scalable reporting within NetSuite
- MBA or advanced degree (optional)
