InformationWeek 2020 IT Salary Report: “It’s a good time to be an IT pro.”
While the national unemployment rate nationwide hovers below four percent, the unemployment rate in the IT sector is estimated to be about half of that, at less than two percent. It continues to be a good time to be an IT pro – a generally accepted belief that InformationWeek recently corroborated in their 2020 IT salary report. An example of which can be seen in the median total compensation for IT pros, which climbed to $110,000 in 2019, up from $105,000 the year before.
Additional findings from the salary report include:
- The gender pay gap between men and women IT pros is closing, and
- Based on responses, women were more likely to have been promoted in the last year (15%) than men (7%).
- Nearly half of workers 44 and younger (49%) were more likely to find certifications as a valuable way to develop their careers compared to workers 45 and older (38%), and
- Those 44 and younger also reported higher satisfaction with their jobs – specifically, 50% reported being satisfied and 17% reported being very satisfied.
Top Markets for IT Pros This Year
CompTIA also recently updated their list of the best U.S. cities for technology professionals. Factors that were taken into consideration include: metropolitan areas with 250,000 or more residents, the total number of job ads, the location quotient (number of job ads divided by the number of people employed), the cost of living, the cost of living adjusted median earnings, one-year job growth projections, five-year job growth projections and the median IT salary.
